SUSTAINABLE CITIES/The Port of Rotterdam

The port of Rotterdam has the ambition to be the most sustainable port in the world. By breaking new ground in the way it operates, which includes the development of Maasvlakte 2, the port of Rotterdam wants to be at the forefront of sustainability and accessibility. This way, we strengthen Dutch and European competitive power and make Rotterdam Rijnmond a region where people like to live, work and recreate.

By sustainability we mean working towards a greener industry and logistics and enhancing the quality of our environment. We cannot simply say goodbye to fossil fuels overnight, but we can develop sustainable alternatives in the meantime. Wind energy, solar energy and energy from biomass provide a viable alternative to fossil fuels.

The Rotterdam Climate Initiative (European Sustainable Cities)

The drivers of the Rotterdam Climate Initiative include the Port of Rotterdam, the City of Rotterdam, the employers' organisation Deltalinqs and the Environmental Protection Agency Rijnmond. The goal is to reduce CO2 emissions by 50% by 2025 and to make Rotterdam 100% climate proof.

Just as important as setting a concrete future goal is to anchor climate change mitigation action as a “normal matter of course”. The Rotterdam approach is one of collaboration. Shops, businesses, institutions, housing associations, financiers and contractors are all able to contribute in the transition to green energy.
