Malmö has an ambitious yet realistic vision of
its mobility system. With a clear focus on improving sustainable transport
modes, Malmö’s transport planning is linked to the overall urban planning
process and takes into account commuter patterns as well as social factors,
including accessibility for different social groups. Plans for a tram network,
encouraging walking, and developing cycling programmes are this growing city’s
answer to the increase of car transport and an excellent way to promote
alternative and healthy travel. Additionally, the Malmö approach focuses not
only on passenger transport but also on the sustainable movement of goods
(urban freight).
Sustainable Initiatives:
- Sustainable urban development (modern architecture + sustainability = true)
- Every fourth journey in Malmö is made using a bike (reducing CO2 emission and noise, improved air quality and health)
- Apple-cores becoming biogas for the buses (reducing the mountain of waste, creating sustainable energy)
- Free school dinners for all children soon fully organic (better health for all children, reduced climate effect)
- Events in Malmö to provide - not consume energy (reduced environmental effect and better urban environment)
- Windpower in Öresund provides electricity to 60 000 households (sustainable energy)
- Sweden's first Fairtrade City (sustainable consumption)
- Many families in Malmö choose to share a car (reduced congestion, less noise and emissions, improved air quality)
- Green roofs and ponds stop flooding (adapting to a changing climate and increases biological diversity)
- Out is in, in Malmö (good urban environment, integration and better health)
