Ecological overshoot is
when a population’s demands on an ecosystem exceed the capacity of that
ecosystem to regenerate the resources demanded. Overshoot results in ecological
assets being diminished and carbon waste accumulating in the atmosphere.
The overshoot day is that day of a year when humanity begins using more
ecological resources and services in a given year than Earth can regenerate in
that year.
