To reach the goal of a ‘Green Nanjing Youth
Olympic Games’, Nanjing deployed the world’s second largest EV public
transportation fleet and built up the largest and most centralised charging
station for the EV fleet serving the Games, in an extremely short time period.
Nanjing is profoundly aware of the significance
of how NEVs can relieve the issues of energy crisis and atmospheric pollution,
as well as boost the automobile industry's development. Motivated by these
factors, Nanjing deployed a fleet of 3,835 NEVs including public transit buses,
taxis, commuting vehicles and private cars, and built 3 EV battery-swapping
stations and 1,200 charging facilities. These innovations made the Games even
more memorable, and will keep making a contribution to sustainable development
in Nanjing.
The main goals of Nanjing’s NEV promotion are
to:
- To reduce carbon emissions: in 2014 alone,
Nanjing saved 61 million litres of oil and reduced emissions by 246,000 tons of
CO2. These targets will be increased for 2015.
- To improve air quality in Nanjing: by widely
adopting NEVs, lots of automobile emissions have been eliminated, and air
quality in Nanjing has improved dramatically. By the end of 2014, the emissions
reductions were equivalent to 1,230 trees planted.
