SUSTAINABLE CITIES/Ljubljana, European Green Capital 2016

The European Green Capital is a European Commission initiative. The title of 'European Green Capital' is awarded annually and it promotes and rewards the efforts of cities that are committed to improving the urban environment. The Award is given to a European city that has demonstrated a well-established record of achieving high environmental standards and is committed to ongoing and ambitious goals for future environmental improvement and sustainable development.

Ljubljana received recognition for raising environmental awareness amongst its citizens, for its sustainability strategy 'Vision 2025', its implementation of a range of urban green measures over the past decade and its impressive transportation network.

In 2007 Ljubljana introduced sustainable development vision until 2025, with 93 infrastructure projects that are important for our environment and quality of life. We have adopted a package of sustainability documents and have so far implemented more than 650 larger and smaller investment projects, each of which is aimed towards improving the quality of residents’ life in the city.
