Only tripartite U.N.
agency, since 1919 the ILO brings together governments, employers and workers
representatives of 187 member
States , to set
labour standards, develop policies and devise programmes promoting decent work
for all women and men.
The main aims of the
ILO are to promote rights at work, encourage decent employment opportunities,
enhance social protection and strengthen dialogue on work-related issues.
ILO estimates that
more than a billion women and men are unemployed, underemployed or working
poor. A direct result of this is that some 120 million migrant workers and
their families have left their home countries in hopes of finding a job
somewhere else. An estimated 500 million new jobs will be needed over the next
decade to absorb new entrants to the labour market, most of them youth and
women. These are the human faces of the social dimension of sustainable
development, and their needs must figure in sustainable development policies.
